Take A Dip In New York City

Take a Dip in NYC

The City during the summer can be rough. Sometimes it seems like every street corner has just spritzed itself with the newest eau-de-garbage perfume; and forget the heat wave you feel walking over a subway grate. Yikes. Believe it or not, though, there are ways to beat the heat—and the stink—without fleeing to the Hamptons or Connecticut. However, it usually means going up a few stories.

We've put together a list of four of our favorite rooftop pools that you and yours just might be able to wander into during these hot summer months… but shhh, keep it on the down low! Don’t want them getting too crowded, now do we?

  1. We've talked about the Beach at Dream Downtown before—and for good reason. It's got so much to offer, including a second-floor terrace complete with a glass-floored pool. Yes, you read that right: glass floored pool. That's about as chic as it gets! There's also sand from Montauk that you can find in another area of the terrace—they separate it to keep sandy toes from entering the water (it's a pool, not a beach, after all)—offering you the perfect getaway fix, sans traffic. Day passes are purchasable Monday through Friday for $55, but be forewarned: slots fill up quickly, so you might want to call and book in advance.
  1. La Piscine at Hotel Americano offers a $40 per day guest pass for their gorgeous rooftop pool, surrounded by panoramic views of the West Side and the Hudson River. The pool is open for business Monday through Friday 9 am to 5 pm, and after 2 pm on weekends.
  1. Le Parker Meridien's floor to ceiling windows surrounding their pool will give you one of the best (if not the absolute supreme!) views of Central Park you've ever experienced. A day pass, while relatively steep, coming in at a whopping $150, also allows for access to the nearby gym. There's also a sundeck right outside the pool... doesn't get much more all-inclusive than that.
  1. If you want to get out of Manhattan for the day, but aren't quite up to make the trek to one of the beachside towns we mentioned—or, if you’re afraid of heights!—the McCarren Hotel & Pool in Williamsburg is a good bet. Larger than most, at 40 by 20 feet, the pool is saltwater-based (!), at ground level, and affordable to boot. From 11 am to 9 pm Monday through Thursday, you can take a daylong dip for $40; and over the weekend (including Friday), that rate only increases to 60 bucks. Reservations are suggested, though the pool deck offers somewhere in the arena of 150 seats, so your chances of grabbing a spot are good.

Now, you might’ve noticed that all three of these top-notch pools are located within the confines of a hotel. That’s no coincidence—it’s called marketing for what the people want. In the summertime, people want waterfront (even if in some cases it is chlorinated), and they’ll pay to get access. So while you’re dipping your toes into one of our listed locations, think about what you read here and how you might apply similar practices to your business. This doesn’t have to mean “working” by the pool; think of it more as a personal investment.
